So many people are supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement following the events of this summer.

Some have now taped signs into their home windows or business windows that are visible from the street, some are passing out pins to support the message, sporting “witness wear” (swag like tee shirts and ball caps), and some are posting statements on web or social media accounts.

While this is all well-meaning, it’s not Black Lives Matter. It’s Black Lives Marketing.

There have always been – and will always be – important causes and initiatives to get behind. Things to say we are for or against. And it’s especially true this year: an election year, during a global pandemic, in the midst of an economic recession and a controversial political climate.

It is great to leverage influence for good and use our voice for change. But let’s not replace apathy with advertising or mistake advocacy for action.

What we need right now is authenticity and action.

Action Steps | things we can all do.

01 Listen + watch + read about the history of Black oppression.

02 Donate or Support Orgs that work to remedy racial injustices.

03 Facilitate open and honest discussions with family and friends on topics of race.

04 Call out and reject racism when you see it. Encourage others to do the same.

05 Honor the feelings and experiences of Black people.

And…Vote.

So many more people are now aware of racial injustices, and more committed to see change happen. Let’s all keep that momentum going and not settle for less than God’s best for every. single. person.
